If your career choice is the fashion design field, you should have a good eye for color, style, and shape, an the ability to sketch. Classes and a background in art and design is also important. An excellent portfolio is a must for your career search. A two- or four-year degree in fashion design is must, as is knowledge of textiles and a familiarity with the quirks of a variety of fabrics. Because of the nature of their work, designers must often work flexible hours in order to accommodate their clients’ schedules and are often under tight deadlines and budgets. Salaried positions are also available in design firms, retail stores, apparel manufacturing and distribution. Management and executive positions are available to career applicants that are interested in the business side of fashion design.
